More than a century ago, the American Tobacco Company began to capitalize on America’s growing fascination with baseball by including—and promoting—a huge series of “ballplayer pictures” inside its brands of smoking tobacco. Thus, T206 baseball cards were born.

It’s unclear if the program was aimed at adults or at kids who, it may have been thought, would pester their fathers to buy more cigarettes so they could collect another player for their collection. After all, there might be a Ty Cobb hiding in there somewhere! And where the heck was Honus Wagner? He had to be in there somewhere, but no one was finding him!
