Rare Baseball Cards for Sale: Making Smart Buys

Obviously if you're looking for rare baseball cards for sale, you've come to the right place.

There's nothing sweeter than a 100-year-old card from one of collecting's most popular sets. Look through the listings on the upper left side of the page and whether you're shopping for graded T206 cards or ungraded ones, you'll find plenty to choose from.

But there are some important factors to keep in mind while you decide which ones to add to your collection or buy for someone else you know.

When it comes to vintage baseball cards, especially those more than 50 years old, we suggest considering graded cards. It takes away some of the guesswork and the cards are already neatly presented in a holder. You can find bargains in ungraded cards, though, since so many people just don't want to bother getting their cards graded-even T206 cards. It certainly doesn't mean they're hiding something, but that possibility does exist.

Are you collecting for the enjoyment of it or for possible investment? Maybe a little of both? If you're just buying for fun, then condition isn't going to be as important. There are a lot of "poor" and "fair" condition rare baseball cards for sale that look very nice, especially when encapsulated. Some even say the wear gives them a little character.

If you're buying for investment, the rule of thumb is to buy the absolute best you can afford. High grade vintage cards rarely go 'down' in value. Stick to popular players, low population cards and high grades. Remember, though, to buy the card, not the holder. There can be a difference between two cards graded the same. Be sure the card is centered reasonably well.

If you're buying partly for investment and partly for fun, stick to Hall of Famers in any grade. Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson and other players known to most fans are almost 'no-lose' situations.

Define your goals and don't be afraid to pull the trigger if it's something you really want. There will be plenty of others ready to grab the same card. After all, they're not making any more!
