T206 Cards a Huge Part of REA Auction

T206 Wagner sold for $282,000 Robert Edward Auctions closed out its annual auction early this morning with T206 cards a major focus once again.

A Honus Wagner, graded PR-FAIR, sold for $282,000 including the buyer's premium. This was a card that walked into a Connecticut baseball card show in the mid-80s and had been housed in the collection of a father-son team since.

One of the hobby's rarest cards, a T206 Ty Cobb with Cobb advertising back, generated 32 bids. The SGC 30 grade brought plenty of interested bidders who wanted one of about a dozen in existence. It sold for $111,625.

REA also sold a PSA 9 T206 Walter Johnson, the finest card of its kind in existence, for $55,812. Not bad for something that came out of a pack of cigarettes 100 years ago and probably cost about a nickel.

A near set (518/524) of T206 cards, ranked #9 on the SGC Set Registry, brought $41,125.

In addition to the Wagner, REA offered an amazing FIVE different Magie error cards in varying conditions. The card would be the highlight of virtually any other auction, but these guys had the market just about cornered this spring. The highest price was $26,438. They also had four Eddie Plank cards. This rarity is on just about every T206 collector's want list. prices ranged from $18,800 for a 'restored' version to $58,750 for an SGC 40.

Overall, the auction generated $10.12 million in sales and all but four of the 1700+ lots were sold.
